Our former neighbor contacted me a few weeks back inquiring about engagement photos for her brother who had just recently proposed to his girlfriend. This weekend Eddie and Heather came down from Cleveland to do a little shopping, visit their sister and take some time with me for photos. Eddie proposed to Heather on her birthday right at the conclusion of a hockey game that he coached. Each young player came out of the locker room and brought a flower to Heather, who just thought she was being treated extra special on her birthday. Well, she was! She just didn't know what everyone else there knew, that Eddie was also going to propose to her! She said "yes" in front of many of the people most important to them and they plan to marry in the summer of 2011. Eddie and Heather, I hope that you always center yourselves in the community of people that love and care for you and that your marriage is stronger because of it. I also hope that every day of your marriage is filled with as much joy in each other as you have now!

(I wanted to note too that Eddie and Heather could not have been more fun to photograph. They hardly seemed to notice me, which made my job easy and also made for some great photos. This last one in particular ranks right up there as one of my personal favorites - ever. Thanks again Eddie and Heather!)

I want to make a quick note of Ezra's first words since this blog really serves as the only sort of record I keep and use to reference when I someday soon put together his baby book. He said his first word, "bye-bye", not too long after his ten month birthday. Since then he has added to his repertoire: "ducky," "quack-quack,""cracker," "mama" and, just today, "go". Today we celebrated his 1st birthday (a little early, the actual date is March 12) with my family. Much like Myles, Ezra is much more talkative after being around so many people for a day. He loved the attention. And the cake.

I assure you, I have not forgotten about this lil' guy. His personality is emerging more and more every day. For instance, it looks like we may have another cheese-grinner on our hands. Just yesterday he took a break from nursing to look up at me and squint those big brown eyes almost shut and flash a quick smile. He will be different from Myles, he's much tougher and much more outspoken. But, like Myles, he's sweet to the core. We've had much difficulty with his sleeping at night and this week he slept in his crib without coming out for only about the 3rd time in his 10 months of earthly existence. He likes to be with his mama. Which is probably the thing he is most outspoken about - "WHY AM I IN MY CRIB WHEN YOU COULD BE HOLDING ME!!!!???? A prophet's name turns out to be more than appropriate, he has a fire in his belly that someday will curb that VOICE to speak for the voiceless. I just know it.

I pulled out the camera and made sure to document a few moments on his 10 month birthday (the 12th). Here's his sweet self:

Batting a Thousand

For awhile, probably at Myles' lowest point in terms of eating, I started keeping track of his calorie intake. I soon needed to stop because I could only take so much disappointment over something so out of my control. Too many days his calories totaled less than 300. It's enough to make one CRAZY. I've since learned that it's more important to look at his progress over a period of time, months not days or hours. That being said, the kid has possibly eaten more in the past three weeks than the past three years combined. Not really, probably, but it sure feels like it. He is asking to eat ALL THE TIME. His eating pattern is still strange and even after asking for something he might not touch it at all or he might be asking for more. No rhyme or reason. Although in the big picture it may not make much difference, I decided, just for fun, tonight to estimate the number of calories he ate (including his high calorie drinks) today. (One skill I acquired in those over-obsessive calorie counting months was to know approximate calories per serving for most foods...). It was over a thousand! Today might just be one day but, seriously, he was bent over with no shirt on before his bath and he HAS A BELLY ROLL.

My First Cincinnati Friend

Our first time visiting UCC after moving here we walked home with a family who lived down the street. They invited us over for dinner that same week. I had no idea then that Lauren would become one of my closest friends here. Although they no longer live down the street from us we spend time together weekly. She is the kind of friend whom I consider a gift from God. A few weeks ago we got together with her family and tried to get some photos. Andrew did not want to look at the camera! Two year olds certainly have a mind of their own! (Of course, I already knew this from my own now THREE year old!) Some of my favorites:

A somewhat newer facet to my job (the one where I am a 'pastor') is to write, or commission someone else to write, a Prayer Note each week to encourage our church family in their commitment to be a praying people. Being responsible for something like this certainly keeps me on my toes - it's humbling to think about whether or not I've spent time "on my knees" (as they say) as I encourage others in prayer. Donuts. Thumbs-up (go faster). Getting air. Switching tubes. Bumping tubes. Riding backward. Seeing who can stay on the longest (literally hours). My sisters and I spent our summer weekends behind the boat constantly pushing Dad to keep going until dusk. Now Myles gets to help start out the next generation of all-day tubers! This past summer he had his first ride. He was all smiles and oblivious to the fact that this was a 'scary' experience. Until they fell off that is. Mark knew that if either of them were going to fall they both needed to since Myles couldn't be left alone in either case. So, even though we were going quite slow, they hit a big wave and both went over the back. Myles cried a little but I think we convinced him that falling off was really cool.

was the first thing that Myles said this morning after he rolled out of bed.

He seemed to have a good time and was especially stoked to be the infamous "Elmo". I intended for Ezra to be a chili-pepper (thanks to his cousin Henry) but didn't think to try the costume on him until last minute. It wasn't quite long enough. So, we pulled out the froggy. (The same one Myles was LAST YEAR. Could these boys be any more different?) We met up with some friends and walked around the neighborhood. Good times.

My camera sat in my bag most of this past month. Trying not to get too down about it since I'm finding that this quest for "balance" is not just daily or even weekly but also monthly (yearly?). Although technically church never stops, we follow the university schedule pretty closely and things really pick up in September. It's fun and I am starting to find a good rhythm. A rhythm that did not include much photographing. And just when that rhythm slows down (a bit) - or is halted like last night when I couldn't lead my own small group on its first week because Myles did not feel well and Mark worked overnight - I start to have to try and figure it out again. How does photography fit in again? This morning reading "Photography Friday" by my friend Jess over @ 503 Photography I wanted to keep on keeping on with this whole photography venture. And LOOK what I found to photograph! This cutie patootie.

(Please don't feel sorry for me. Next week I'm photographing my first senior, I'm working on some Christmas card dates and have a couple great ideas swirling in my head after an email I just received from a friend. Sometimes it just all seems a little slow and unbalanced. Today. But maybe not a year from now looking back.)

Last night around 3:30am Mark and I both thought we heard the little patter of feet in the hall and, as we do many nights, we waited for Myles to peep his little head over the bed at one of us and say "up". We waited, but he didn't come. Finally, I sat up a little and peered into the hallway. Myles was standing just outside our door but a little behind the frame and against the wall. I told him to come in. He came in and I lifted him up into bed.

"What are you doing sweetie?"
"Mommy. Daddy. Hi-ing."
"You were hiding from Mommy and Daddy?"
Signs "yes." With his foot.

Seriously? You could not dream up this kid.

Our Ezra is six months old! So hard to believe. The days fly by with two kids. Although he was a bit fussy at first he really has mellowed out and is so sweet. (He still has his intense crying moments where only Mama can soothe him). At his six month appointment this week he was 28 inches long, 16lbs 5oz and healthy. A tooth broke through this past month and there are at least four more swollen areas in his gums that look promising. These likely explain why he's waking up during the night again. We hope when they finally break through peaceful nights will return once again.

Today I received a phone call with results from Myles' endocrinology appointment last week. As a recommendation from the feeding team we decided to have him tested for endocrine problems (focusing on the possibility of a growth hormone deficiency). This decision came after a few check-ups over about 6-8 months in which Myles gained a little weight but did not grow in length. Apparently when kids gain weight they should gain in height/length.

So, last week Myles got a lot of blood drawn. To make a complicated story simple, each of the many tests ordered came back normal. With the possible shortfall of still not having any answer to our little boys' struggles, we are thankful that nothing is wrong.

In addition to the blood tests they did an x-ray to determine his bone age. I am not sure what exactly this means but this did give us an interesting perspective on Myles and his growth. Mark explained to me that one thing that would be an encouraging outcome was if Myles' bone age was delayed. This did not sound like a good thing to me, but I guess that if your bones are still young your body has the potential to catch-up in height.

The endocrinologist today explained to me that Myles' bone age is only at about 16 months. She explained that most often when they see this they expect that at some point the child will catch up in height. She felt that if Myles gains weight he will likely grow as well. If you plot Myles' height on a growth chart as a 16 month old (rather than his actual age - 33 months) it looks like he will achieve his optimal height (calculated according to family history). His length on a growth chart at this point however, puts him only at about 5'5" as an adult (without considering options for growth hormones) which does not measure up with his gene pool.

To summarize: (I feel like this is like those online "Real Age" tests, except this is the real deal...). Back to square one in some ways in that Myles needs to gain weight. I find this a bit frustrating since this is what we've been trying to do for the past two years or so. However, the fact that his bone age is 16 months means that time is on our side. I continue to have much hope for my sweet Myles and today felt like the Spirit nudged me and said that my hope is not in vain.

I've been a little hesitant to start solids with Ezra, given our history of feeding solids to Myles. Today I finally caved since he definitely has shown interest for a while now. He seemed to really enjoy it, although what he really wanted was to soothe his newly-toothed gums by chewing on the spoon.

A blurb from Zack Arias (photographer) has me encouraged today as I often doubt this decision to adventure into the photography business. If you need a little courage today I encourage you to read more.

A well known photographer once said that they dove in over their heads and swam for the top. That’s pretty inspirational. I’ve done the same thing. However… I don’t think they said anything about how many dead bodies that they had to swim by to get to the surface again.

Want to climb to the top of Mount Everest? You’ll be passing the dead bodies of those who wanted the same thing and never made it.

But damn it all… Those dead souls died climbing. How many explorers have died exploring? Countless. How many explorers have died sitting at home? Countless still.

The Best Laid Plans

Last week my sister, Jessica, and her fiance, Mike, were married in a beautiful ceremony at Camp Geneva. The intention was to marry there on the shores of Lake Michigan, but, as any Michigander knows, the weather often has it's own plans. The day of the wedding brought strong winds and fairly constant rain showers so, last minute (guests had already begun to arrive), we decided to move the festivities indoors. The setting wasn't exactly as Jessica dreamed, but when something like that happens I think it actually makes it easier to focus on what really matters. What really mattered was that Jess and Mike joined their two lives together in front of family, friends and their Heavenly Father. We are excited to have Mike in our family and enjoyed a great day (and night) celebrating their marriage!

The night before the wedding their closest family and friends enjoyed an incredible sunset on the beach as we rehearsed for what we thought would be a beach wedding. I took my camera along and am so glad I did! What a gorgeous night to celebrate the [new] Luepkes with those who love them most. During our two years in Cincinnati we have been consistently loved by this family. These two kids (and their mama y papa) are so full of life. Sometimes their craziness fills the room. Joyful, fun, creative, loving, selfless.... just a few of the words that come to mind when I think of these friends. It was great following their two munchkins around while they picnicked in the park. It ended up being good that I shot an insane amount of photos since they were constantly moving! The Toddler Bed Saga Continues

Myles continues to struggle with sleeping in his own room and bed. He doesn't cry or anything, he just takes a really long time to sleep and most days skips his nap. (No, I don't think he's done napping yet, he almost always falls asleep in the car in the early evening on these days and days he naps it's for a good 3 hrs). He cannot open the door since the knobs in our house are quite old and a bit tricky at times, so we keep his door shut until we go to bed. Once we come up for the night we shut the gate at the top of the stairs, open Myles door slightly (so he can come to our room when he wakes up in the a.m.) and lock the bathroom door from the outside. Two nights ago, I went to open his door and it immediately hit something - Myles was asleep against it. The night before that I opened the door and saw this:and tonight, when Mark opened the door, this is what he saw:

Ezra turns 4 months old this week! He's rolled over a few times and is becoming more and more interactive. He loves to be on his changing table (once he's naked) and once and awhile we get him to giggle, he's a bit ticklish. His smile brightens my day and is SO sweet. He also ADORES his big brother, whom he allows to do just about anything to him. Myles better watch out though cause his lil' brother is not so little - at his check-up this week he weighed 15lbs 4oz and was over 26 inches long!

Thursday I got my hair cut. That may be a bit of an understatement. Currently, about 10 inches or so of my hair sits in a bag waiting to be mailed to Locks of Love. I've toyed with the idea of chopping it for awhile - I finally took the plunge and am so glad I did! I realize that because I rarely post pictures of myself on here these pictures may not show how drastic of a change it is. (Or even if you have seen me lately my hair was likely in a ponytail). My hair was about half-way down my back. Anywho, here are a few pics of me with the boys after having a pizza picnic in the park. All credit to my hubby for taking them.

Sometime in the life of our house there existed only two bedrooms and Myles' was at the back of the house. Between the later-added third bedroom and Myles' room there is still a window. With the move to the toddler bed/new room we have found it very convenient to stand on the desk in the third room and spy through that window. Today was only the second time Myles has taken a nap in his bed. He got up at 5:30am this morning so I was really grateful when at nap time he went right to sleep.

(After seeing this I'm not surprised that he managed to fall out twice in one night earlier this week.)

When I first met Pete and Marie at a couples' gathering at our church and found out they were from Michigan it quickly became one of those "no way!" moments that seem to happen so often. Marie is from Grandville where my high school is and Pete is from Muskegon, about 5 minutes from where my parents now live (I put that in minutes instead of miles to emphasize my MI roots...). I didn't imagine upon meeting them that I would one day be photographing their family. Later this Summer they will expand into three (okay for Sadie's sake it will be four) as they welcome baby Pierce! Pete and Marie, thanks for allowing me to photograph you (and for choosing such a great location)!

My friend and co-pastor, Mandy, exudes such quiet strength and joy. She is passionate, creative and confident in the person God created her to be. During our time together I could see that she instills these same characteristics into her daughter, Zoe. A week ago we moved Myles into his very own room (for the first time in his little life) AND into a toddler bed instead of his crib. The first night I stayed in there for 2.5 hrs and each time he got out I put him back in. He found the game quite amusing. I kept sitting down in the chair for some reason - until I realized how futile that was. When I decided to stay standing in between laying him back down, he scooted to the edge of the bed and then said "mommy" as he pointed to the chair. He was waiting for me to sit down before he got out again.

He finally fell asleep and did not wake up until morning. The following nights were better but he did not nap until Thursday - way too many distractions. (He had Ezra's dresser drawers emptied onto the floor, and books everywhere). On Thursday, he finally took a nap but, unfortunately, I had to wake him up to go to the airport. We've been in Michigan for the past few days for my sister Jess' wedding shower. Tomorrow the adventures in the "Sesame-St. bed" (as Myles calls it) resume once again.

It's fascinating to me that so many people comment on who Ezra looks like. Some people swear he looks just like Myles, or say "man you are just like your Daddy", and others say "I think he looks like you." I think the truth he shares traits of all of us but, here are pics of each of us around the same age he is now. You can decide for yourself.

When Hillary wrote and said that they would like to have their pictures at the Cincinnati Zoo, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to build some "lifestyle" shots into my portfolio!

Sim and Hillary and their lil girl attend UCC with us. Hillary works as a pediatric resident and Sim balances that crazy life by being a stay-at-home Dad. They also have made the incredible decision to step out in faith and join a team from our church in moving to Indonesia for 2 years after residency. What incredible people of faith.

As you might imagine, I thoroughly enjoyed spending time chasing them around the zoo for the morning!

So I Had This Idea (PLEASE READ)

It's not a new idea really, in fact, thousands of others have had the same idea. For me, it's been slow in the making. An idea developed over the past few years. Somewhere inside of me I've dreamed of being a photographer. This probably comes as no surprise to you, the person who reads this blog. :) Recently I came to a realization that no good reason exists to not pursue this dream. I know it seems like funny timing, just after having another baby, but for some reason it simply feels right. There is something about having kids that spurs me on to want to be my best, to live my life as fully "me" as possible. Although the balance between being a wife, mom, pastor and now photographer will be challenging at times I look forward to the growth each of these incredible opportunities brings my way!

The past month or so I have been working on getting everything officially set up. I am working on building my portfolio by offering a slew of free photo shoots (sorry, wish I could offer more but this would not exactly mean I was a "business" but instead more like a charity! ;) ). I am also about ready to launch my website!! Exciting stuff. AND I have chosen a name for this new venture..... drumroll please..... FRENCH PRESS PHOTOGRAPHY! (In the next week or so, when my site launches live you will be able to read more about that choice.)

I am hoping to begin taking clients in July already, so if you are interested please let me know, or wait just a bit for more info when www.frenchpressphotography.com is launched!

And finally, a word about this blog. This blog will still exist (don't worry mom!) and will still contain stories and pictures from our family but now in addition it will feature photographs of those people I am privileged to work with and maybe a little of their story from time to time. I look forward to sharing this new aspect of my life with you all!

A Quick Visit

Vanessa, Rolondo and Raven were in town from California over Memorial Day weekend. I had intended to take family pictures for them, but it was raining at the time we scheduled. So, we hung out on our porch for a couple hours and then I quick grabbed a couple shots of Raven and Myles in the backyard. We love our friends and are glad that they come to Cincinnati occasionally to visit family (both biological and us). It made me miss Pasadena though. I hope not too far down the road we can make a visit back. Hard to believe it's been 2 years since we moved from there!

Myles has been eating a little better the past few days. This is in contrast to the next-to-nothing amount he's been having these last months. (I will never understand how he can run around for hours fueled on one or two measly pieces of bacon). He's playing outside ("ow-sigh") a lot now which is probably increasing his appetite - and burning more calories.

We've realized for a while now that Myles needed some new shoes. It was only after both Mark and I noticed him walking funny that we got ourselves in gear to take him shoe shopping. After an hour in the shoe aisle at Target where we could not find his size in any style that we liked we ended up stopping by Gap and got him these super cute "water shoes" (Waverunners anyone?). Later we ordered Cookie Monster shoes online (I'm a sucker, I know) and they arrived today!

He Just Keeps Growing

Yesterday Ezra had his 2 month check-up. He weighs 12 lbs 11oz and is 24.25 inches long. This puts him at the 86th percentile for weight and 97th for height. I know I shouldn't compare but, he's wearing clothes that Myles wore at 6 and 7 months...

Putt-Putt

Otherwise known as mini-golf. Tonight we went to General Custard's Golf and Gulp with our small group. I didn't actually play but followed the kiddos around with my camera (and then tended to Ezra). Thankfully our group finds the kids quite entertaining. Mr. Myles (as our group affectionately calls him) stole everyone's ball at least once I believe. He also assisted many group members with a hole-in-one by picking up the ball by hand and putting it in the hole.

I found that a mini-golf course makes for great physical therapy. Myles climbed slopes, went over barriers, crawled up on benches and practiced walking up and down stairs. He enjoyed every minute of it (except for the part afterward where we tried to get him to eat ice cream.)

Ironically, most of our pictures of Ezra feature him wide-eyed awake when in reality he still sleeps for the majority of his days. I love the newborn I'll-sleep-anywhere-through-anything mentality. Here he is zonked on the chair even through his brother's pestering lovin'.

The Simple Life

At one month my life has been pretty simple thus far. I enjoy eating, sleeping, pooping and being held as much as possible. I am alert and happy in the mornings (which is when I like to practice my smile) and a little fussy in the evenings. I despise diaper changes and being the least bit hungry. My mom worries about me getting enough to eat but, I've soaked through so many diapers (I'm what they call a "heavy wetter") and need two inserts in my Fuzzi Bunz so I don't know why she worries (besides, I already weigh 10 lbs 14 oz). Overall I think I'm a pretty good baby. Just to prove how good I am, here are a few pictures of me on my changing table on Thursday April 9 - my one month birthday!

Myles Tells His First Joke

(Background: While trying to assist Myles in naming his new baby doll, Mark and I threw out many boy names most of which Myles shook his head "no" to. During this process, for some reason, Myles found the name "Steve" incredibly hilarious. He kept signing "more" just to have us say it again and even said it a few times himself.)

Fast forward to yesterday just before his nap: I am swinging Myles up in the air and goofing around with him. Then I lift him up next to Ezra's bassinet so that he can see inside.

Me: "Want to see your brother? There he is, he's looking at you, see?"
Myles: (points and smiles)
Me: "Do you know your brother's name?"
Myles: "Teeve" (followed by a fit of giggles).

First Outing

Friday we took our first family outing. We went about two miles to see our Pediatrician and then to a local shopping center for some nursing bras (where Mark stayed in the car with the boys since they were both sleeping). Ezra is doing well, he regained his birth weight already. Myles got really excited to go to the doctor, he kept pointing at Ezra, signing and saying "doctor". I think he enjoyed going and not being the patient - especially since he still got a couple stickers out of the deal.

Bike Ride

Taking Myles in his first bike ride today was one of those times when I really felt like a DAD. I remember riding in a similar seat on the back of my dad's old blue Schwinn. Now the roles have changed. Amazing to think that he'll be in my shoes in a few years. Unfortunately for Myles, his friend with the closest size head was a girl, hence his stylish pink helmet. Sure this will be the first of many rides with Myles right behind me.
